Embedded Mutual Fund Solutions: What It Takes to Put Investing Inside Your App

Discover what it really takes to embed mutual fund investing inside an existing app, from onboarding and KYC to transactions, SIPs, portfolios, and reporting. Explore the technology, integration models, and key considerations for businesses building seamless embedded investment experiences.

Embedded Mutual Funds Solutions
Every few years, a financial product stops being a destination and becomes a feature. Payments did it. Lending did it. Mutual funds are next.
That's the promise of embedded mutual fund solutions: instead of sending users elsewhere to invest, you bring compliant, end-to-end mutual fund investing inside the app they already open every day.
Easy to say. Hard to build. Here's what it actually involves.

What embedded actually means

An embedded mutual fund solution is a complete investing journey — onboarding, KYC, purchases, SIPs, redemptions, reporting — running inside a host app that isn't primarily an investing app. A multi-asset fintech. A neobank. A payroll platform. A lending app looking for a non-credit revenue line.
Three quick clarifications:
It's not a redirect. Sending users to a third-party site with your logo in the corner is a referral. You lose the session, the conversion, and usually the relationship.
It's not just an API key. APIs are one layer. Embedded means the journey arrives working — screens, states, error handling, edge cases.
It's not a shortcut around regulation. Distribution still happens under a valid ARN, with regular plans and proper disclosures. Embedded changes who builds the technology, never who's allowed to distribute.

Why in-house builds run six months late

Teams who've shipped payments integrations scope an MF module the same way. It doesn't behave the same way.
KYC is a decision tree, not a flow. Resident individuals, NRIs, minors, HUFs, corporates — each follows a different path, across multiple KRA statuses.
Folio logic is stateful and unforgiving. New folio or existing? What if the investor already holds the scheme through another distributor? Folio-level tax lots drive capital gains reporting — and you find out you got it wrong in March.
Mandates are the silent SIP killer. eNACH rejections, amount ceilings, debit failures, retries, expiry. A SIP whose mandate fails on the third instalment is worse than no SIP, because the investor blames you.
The happy path is a minority. Placed, rejected by AMC, payment pending, cut-off missed, partially allotted. Each needs a message, a retry policy and a reconciliation rule.
Reporting is where trust breaks. Investors compare your XIRR against the RTA statement. Any mismatch costs credibility permanently.
Everyone budgets for the API integration. Almost nobody budgets for the 40+ screens sitting on top of it.

Three ways to embed

WebView embed. Pre-built MF workflows dropped into your existing Android and iOS app with your branding. Live in days, minimal engineering, zero maintenance — new features and regulatory changes roll out automatically. Best for multi-asset fintechs adding MF as a category, or anyone validating demand before committing headcount.
API-first. You build the front end and call the infrastructure directly. Total UX control, months of work, permanent maintenance. Genuinely right when investing is your core product — expensive when it isn't.
White-label app. A fully branded investor web and mobile app under your name, plus a distributor console for investors, AUM and commissions. Best for IFAs and distribution houses needing a complete digital presence rather than a module.

Most teams combine them — embed to validate, then take deeper control of specific journeys once the data justifies it.

What MFStack gives you

MFStack is built by Betalectic, a team with 11+ years across fintech and BFSI, including years working closely with Cybrilla on mutual fund systems and AMC integrations. The workflows run on Fintech Primitives infrastructure — already proven across the Indian MF ecosystem.
Inside the embed: digital onboarding and KYC for resident individuals, NRIs and non-individuals; lump sum, SIP, bulk SIP, redemption and SWP (switch and STP coming); real-time holdings, returns and capital gains reporting; distributor tooling for investor management, assisted transactions and sub-brokers.
Deploy it fully managed, or inside your own cloud for complete data sovereignty. ONDC-ready, if open network distribution is on your roadmap.
Your investors. Your AUM. Your data.

Designing an embed that converts

Trigger from context, not a menu tab. Salary credit, idle balance, a completed goal. A generic "Invest" tab is a graveyard.
Reuse what you know. If you already hold verified PAN and bank data, don't re-ask. The gap between 9-step and 4-step onboarding isn't marginal.
Treat the mandate as a first-class flow. It's usually the largest leak in the funnel.
Make the first SIP small. ₹500 started in three minutes beats ₹50,000 that never completes — the AUM comes from transactions two, three and four.
Put the portfolio where they already look. Behind a nested tab, it stops existing.

The metrics that matter

Installs and transaction counts tell you little. Watch KYC completion by investor type, time from intent to first transaction, mandate success rate by bank, and SIP survival at 6 and 12 months — the best predictor of trail revenue you have.
Which points at the real commercial logic: distribution revenue is trail, so a churned investor isn't a lost fee, it's a lost annuity. Optimise for year two, not week one.

Build or embed?

Ask two honest questions. Is investing your core product, or a feature of it? And would a custom-built MF backend ever be a defensible advantage?
For most businesses it wouldn't. Your moat is your distribution, your user relationship, and the context you can trigger from. None of that lives in the backend — which is exactly why embedded mutual fund solutions make sense for everyone whose core product is something else.
