Can a Mutual Fund Distributors Embed Mutual Funds in Their Own App or Website?
Discover how mutual fund distributors can embed investing into their own apps and websites using white-label platforms and embedded mutual fund software. Learn about the available approaches, compliance requirements, and how MF Stack helps MFDs deliver a seamless, branded investor experience without building the technology from scratch.
Many mutual fund distributors reach the same point. The client base is growing, the service is good, and yet every transaction sends the client off to someone else's platform, with someone else's logo and someone else's login.
So the question comes up: can I offer mutual fund investing inside my own app or website instead?
Yes, with the right setup. This post explains what "embedded" means for a distributor, what you still need to have in place, and how embedded mutual fund software for distributors works in practice.
The Short Answer
A registered distributor can offer mutual fund journeys under their own brand, on a website or app they own. The investor browses, onboards, and transacts inside your experience. The technology behind it, including KYC flows, transaction handling, and reporting, is provided by a platform, so you don't build any of it.
The distributor remains the one offering the service. The software powers it.
What "Embedded" Means for an MFD
For fintechs, embedded means adding mutual funds to a large app. For a distributor, it means something simpler: your clients transact without leaving your brand.
Today, many MFDs share a link, and the client lands on a third-party screen. With an embedded setup:
- Your logo, colours, and domain stay in front of the client
- The client's journey starts and ends on your site or app
- You keep the relationship, not the platform
Three Ways to Do It
1. A ready white-label investor app. A complete, branded web and mobile app that you launch as your own. This is the fastest route if you don't already have a website or app with traffic.
2. Embed investing journeys into a site or app you already have. If you have a website, a content blog, or a client app, embeddable workflows let you add onboarding and transaction journeys inside it, rather than sending visitors elsewhere.
3. A distributor-led, assisted model. Many clients, especially first-time investors, don't want to complete everything alone. A distributor-initiated flow lets you start or guide the transaction while the investor completes the required steps. This works well alongside the first two.
Most distributors end up combining them: a branded app for self-serve clients, and assisted journeys for clients who want help.
What You Still Need in Place
Embedded software doesn't replace the basics of being a distributor.
- NISM certification and AMFI registration. To distribute mutual funds, you need to pass the NISM Series V-A exam, complete the Know Your Distributor (KYD) process, and obtain your AMFI Registration Number (ARN) (AMFI). The certification and ARN are valid for three years (Wealthy).
- AMC empanelment. An ARN alone doesn't let you transact with a fund house, since empanelment with each AMC is separate (NISM Series V-A study guide).
- A clear distinction between distribution and advice. MFDs distribute Regular Plan schemes and earn trail commission from the AMC, while advisers who charge fees register separately with SEBI as RIAs (Wealthy). Your app and website should reflect which one you are.
If you are unsure about the compliance side of how you present your offering, check with AMFI's guidance or a compliance professional before you launch.
What You Control vs What the Platform Handles
You control | The platform handles |
Your brand, domain, and colours | KYC and onboarding flows |
Which journeys you offer clients | Transaction processing |
Your client relationship | Reporting and holdings |
How you guide and support investors | Technology upkeep and updates |
What to Look For in Embedded Mutual Fund Software for Distributors
When you compare providers, ask:
- Can I use my own brand, and how much can I customise?
- Does it work on both web and mobile?
- Can it be embedded into my existing website or app, or is it a standalone product only?
- Which transaction types are supported, such as SIP, switch, STP, redemption, and SWP?
- Is there a distributor-led or assisted option?
- Who maintains the technology as regulations and systems change?
- Can I extend or customise it later?
Where MF Stack Fits In
MF Stack provides the technology for distributors who want to offer mutual fund journeys under their own brand. MF Stack is software for distributors and fintechs. It does not allow direct investment, so the distributor remains the service provider to their clients.
What you can use:
- Branded investor apps on web and mobile, with onboarding and KYC, SIP, switch, redemption, and holding reports
- An embeddable workflow to add journeys inside a site or app you already run
- Distributor tools, including web and mobile apps and an Investor DIT app for distributor-initiated transactions
- An ONDC route if you want a buyer app on the network
- Custom solutions when your needs go beyond the standard setup
The Bottom Line
You don't need a development team to give your clients a branded investing experience. You need your registrations in place and a platform that handles the technology underneath. The rest is deciding which route fits your clients: a ready app, an embedded workflow, an assisted model, or a mix.
